After suffering two tough North Hills League losses last week, La Habra’s girls flag football team recorded a convincing 28-0 victory over Brea Olinda in a league game Monday afternoon at Brea Olinda High.
The Highlanders were led by quarterback Presley Cannon who completed 18 of 23 passes for 165 yards and two touchdown passes. Cannon completed passes to seven different La Habra receivers.
“We had good practices leading up to this game and we didn’t focus on past losses,” said Cannon, a senior. “We brought good energy and we all played for the one goal today.”
On the game’s opening possession, the Highlanders (2-2, 4-7) marched 60 yards in 11 plays to take an early lead. Cannon fired a 7-yard TD pass to Elizabeth Posada – her first high school career touchdown – and La Habra led 7-0.
One play following a long punt return by Kaitlin Cauley midway through the second quarter, the Highlanders upped their lead to 14-0 on a 24-yard touchdown run by sophomore Audrey Flores.
With 1:50 remaining in the third quarter, Cannon tossed her second TD pass of the game, this one a 4-yarder to Makenna Caffrey, who was able to haul in the pass despite it being deflected by a Brea defender increasing La Habra’s lead to 21-0.
Caffrey had an outstanding game catching six passes for 50 yards, and along with Hayden Carson, Gisselle Virgen and Ava Bonafide helped the Highlanders’ defense register their second shutout of the season.
“We continued to work hard and didn’t get down on each other when things didn’t go right,” said Caffrey, a junior. “We had a good mental approach today.”
“We really played well together and we’ll get momentum from this win because we know how important every game is from here on out,” said Virgen, a junior safety and wide receiver.
Cannon completed La Habra’s scoring with a 1-yard TD run in the final quarter. Cauley, Flores and Journee Costello combined to rush for 119 yards on 11 carries for the Highlanders. Cauley also had six receptions for 70 yards.
“It felt like a reset for the season today,” said Cauley, a sophomore. “We were all united today and played well together.”
La Habra Coach Robert Atanay was pleased with his team’s performance.
“We were consistent today,” said Atanay. “We kept the pedal to the metal. We got some big plays offensively and defensively. It’s a nice win.”
