Corona del Mar’s baseball team won its second consecutive Sunset League game over Los Alamitos, defeating the Griffins 6-4 Thursday afternoon at Los Alamitos.

CdM won Tuesday’s opener over Los Alamitos 3-2 in nine innings.

On Thursday, CdM opened the scoring in the second inning as JJ Haley drew a bases loaded walk.

Los Al scored two in the bottom of the second as Knolan Otsuka doubled in two runs to put the Griffins ahead 2-1.

CdM tied the game 2-2 in the third inning on an infield hit by Carter Canada.

The Sea Kings scored three runs in the fifth inning. Cason Yarnall had an RBI scoring Will Chavez. Then Jacob Olson tripled to right field to score Jack Phillips and Brady Zenz to make it 5-2.

Los Al pushed across a run in the bottom of the fifth inning when Tanner Nickols singled to drive in Rowan Shelley.

CdM answered back to score in the seventh inning. Max Brengel singled to drive in Haley who doubled to make the score 6-3.

Kyle Womack came in to pitch the bottom of the seventh inning. Los Al was able to push a run across and had the tying run at first base. But Womack was able to notch a strikeout to end the game.

Chavez (5-3) recorded the win, allowing five hits and two earned runs while striking out six in six innings. Chavez also had three hits and scored twice.

The Sea Kings had 16 hits on the day. Max Brengel was 3 for 5 with an RBI, Carter Canada was 2 for 3 with an RBI, Olson was 2 for 2 with a triple and double and two RBI and Jack Phillips and Stevie Jones each had two hits.

The two teams will meet again on Friday at CdM to conclude the three game series.

“This was an exciting game,” said CdM Coach Kevin McCaffrey. “We have been struggling offensively and challenged the boys at practice yesterday. They responded with 16 hits today. They put pressure on Los Al every inning. It was fun to watch them compete like that.

“Will Chavez was really good on the mound. He didn’t feel well and still went out there and gave us everything he had. He competed all game and our defense made plays behind him. Will was also good with the bat today.”

Teams that finish with overall records of at least .500 can petition for at-large CIF playoff berths and McCaffrey hopes his team (10-10, 3-8) can finish strong and reach the playoffs.

“This was a really big win for our ball club and keeps us alive in the playoff race,” he said.

CdM hosts Los Alamitos (6-15, 2-12) Friday at 3:15 p.m. in the final game of the series.
