After two seasons at varsity head boys basketball coach at Santa Ana High School, Zach Johnson said Thursday he has resigned and accepted and assistant coaching position at Beckman High School.

“I stepped down as the coach at Santa Ana about a week ago,” Johnson said. “I will be assisting at Beckman next year. I would like to thank the AD, all of the staff, and most importantly the players at Santa Ana for one of the best experiences I’ve had as a coach. It was truly a blessing to be able to coach at that school.

“I have decided to take a job closer to my house and in the district (Irvine Unified) that I teach.”

Santa Ana was 10-15 overall and finished fifth in the Orange Coast League with a 4-8 record this past season. In his first season, Johnson led the Saints to a 19-8 overall record and 7-5 league mark. The Saints advanced to the second round of the CIF playoffs.

Johnson was one of the coaches in last week’s Santa Ana Prep Classic at Godinez.

Athletic director Brian Lillie could not be reached for comment about a replacement for Johnson.
