Working Wardrobes: Military transitioning into civilian work need our help

It’s hard to express the depth of my gratitude to the brave souls that serve in the military. Everything I am and do today is only possible because of those who fought for the freedoms I deeply cherish.

While thousands will leave the military this year and make the transition to civilian work and life, many transitioning military and Veterans in Orange County will face countless obstacles on their journey to employment.

Transitioning active duty, reserve, guard, Veterans, and their families face a highly-competitive workforce saturated with low-paying jobs. Many of these brave individuals must overcome significant barriers to steady employment. These include access to affordable housing, reliable transportation, childcare, rental assistance, food, and financial help covering gaps in income until the next paycheck arrives.

For those who serve in our military and make grave sacrifices to protect the freedoms we possess as Americans, there is hardly ever just a single barrier to reliable, high-wage work. There are often multiple barriers. Working Wardrobes helps individuals by building bridges over these barriers on the road to gaining meaningful employment.

At Working Wardrobes, we provide workforce readiness services through our VetNet Program to help transitioning active duty, reserve, guard, Veterans, and their families. These full wrap-around services include Veteran Behavioral Health and Peer Support Services (VBHPSS), and a Homeless Veteran Reintegration Program (HVRP), which we are teh only Department of Labor HBRP Grantee in Orange County.

In June, Working Wardrobes will host Power Up for Success, a command sponsored event dedicated to honoring transitioning service members aboard Campt Pendleton by providing in-kind services like wardrobe styling, career panels, workshops, a job fair, professional headshots, lunch, and well-tailored business attire. This year’s event will be on June 17.

On Thursday, June 23, I ask that you join us in saluting our nation’s greatest by participating in Stand and Salute, a day of giving. Your donations will help transitioning active duty, reserve, guard, Veterans, and their families to self-sufficiency. Let’s come together to address the needs of these selfless individuals who voluntarily fight for the freedoms we express every day.

Sincerely,
Bonni Pomush
