Steve Scoggin couldn’t say no when his son Steve asked him to be an assistant coach for Woodbridge High School’s boys basketball team this year.
It was an easy decision, the older Scoggin said Wednesday, indicating when your son asks you to coach, you help.
It obviously meant a lot to the younger Scoggin, now in his fourth year as Woodbridge’s head coach. Before that, he was a long-time assistant at Woodbridge under John Halagan.
His father, long-time head coach at University and Glendora before retiring, has been in the stands all these years cheering for the Warriors and his son. He was supporting his son when he was a player at Mater Dei.
“It’s awesome, I love it, it’s a little surreal,” the younger Scoggin said before becoming emotional and pointing out how much it meant to him to have his father with him on the bench.
The Warriors are competing in the Portola-Woodbridge Classic Friday night and Saturday.
“We’re playing four really good teams, and that’s what we want,” the Warriors head coach said. “We don’t want to shy away from competition. I hope we can win the next two and we’re going to try our best and go and fight and play and see what happens.”
