The WomenShelter of Long Beach (WSLB) Board of Directors is pleased to announce that Kathy McCarrell will be taking the role of Executive Director on July 1, 2022. McCarrell will lead the WomenShelter of Long Beach as it begins a new era, celebrating its 45th anniversary year. WSLB serves over 6,000 women, men, youth, and children in the greater Long Beach area annually.
McCarrell comes to the WomenShelter with more than 25 years of experience leading major nonprofits as an Interim and Executive Director in Southern California. McCarrell previously served as the Interim Executive Director of both the Long Beach Public Library Foundation and the Long Beach Day Nursery. She has a master’s degree in Social Work and is considered an expert in family violence. She is passionate about supporting survivors of domestic violence and eliminating domestic violence through compassionate intervention, education, and personal empowerment.
“I am thrilled with the opportunity to step into the role as Executive Director as the WSLB is poised for amazing growth due to the strong Board of Directors and compassionate, competent staff members that I have come to know and appreciate while working alongside them for the past six months,” said Kathy McCarrell.

Her background in non-profit and social work have helped us lead the organization to new levels with her leadership,” said Kristi Fischer, Board President. “As we look to grow our organization and serve the community, Kathy’s many years of experience in nonprofit management and developing impactful programs make her the perfect fit to lead our organization. We look forward to all she will accomplish as we work to develop a sustainable and successful future for WomenShelter of Long Beach.”
