Junior Cooper Berger pitched a complete game 3-hit shutout to help University defeat Northwood 1-0 in a Pacific Coast League baseball game at University Tuesday.

Northwood pitcher Casey Euper also had an outstanding performance, allowing just one hit.

University’s only hit was a single by Chase Nguyen, who then stole second, advanced to third on a fielder’s choice and scored on a wild pitch.

Both Berger and Euper struck out five. The pitchers were backed up by outstanding defense. Neither team had an error.

Northwood (11-5-1, 9-3) is tied with Beckman, which defeated Laguna Hills 9-3 Tuesday, for first place. Coach Wesley Shaw’s University team (9-10, 6-7) is in fifth place but still in the CIF playoff hunt. Four teams from the league earn automatic playoff berths.

University plays at Northwood Wednesday. The teams then finish their series Friday at Uni.
