University snaps losing streak with road victory over St. Margaret’s in PCL opener

University High School’s boys basketball team broke an 11-game losing streak Tuesday night defeating St. Margaret’s 72-68 in the opening game of Pacific Coast League play.

The Trojans (4-11, 1-0) fought back from a 23-7 deficit at the end of the first quarter and trailed for the first 28 minutes of the game at St. Margaret’s. The win marked the first varsity coaching victory for University’s interim head coach Kendall McHugh.

Senior Isaac Evans helped lead the University comeback with 17 of his 19 points in the second half including a dozen in the fourth quarter.

Senior shooting guard Shervin Moarrefian also scored 19 points including five 3-pointers. Junior forward Josh Thio tied a career high with 11 points off the bench including three 3-pointers and sealed the victory with a pair of free throws with seven seconds remaining.

Senior wing Faris Harb added nine points on three 3-pointers. Senior center Eli Pretto contributed seven points, 11 rebounds and five assists while sophomore point guard Savion Ruth had six points and nine assists.

St. Margaret’s (7-11, 0-1) was led by junior Jack Shea and sophomore Botty O’Kane who each had 16 points. Senior point guard Caiden Isola scored 13 points. St. Margaret’s made 20 of 24 free throws, including all 15 in the second half of which 11 were in the fourth quarter.
