University captures CIF State Regional championship, moves on to finals

The University Trojans captured the Division IV CIF Regional Boys Soccer Championship with a 2-0 home victory over the Granite Hills Cougars Saturday evening. No. 1-seeded Uni defeated No. 2-seed Granite Hills for the second time in the playoffs.

The Trojans won the CIF Division 4 championship the last time the two teams played by a 3-0 score.

University (18-5-1) will play No. 3 seed Del Mar (18-6-3) in the Division IV state finals at Natomas High School in Sacramento Friday, March 13 at 3 p.m.

In Saturday’s match at Uni, University controlled the first half with Granite Hills rarely penetrating past the midfield. Senior Kasra Ghoddousi made it 1-0 in the 17th minute with a strong shot with his left foot for his seventh goal of the season. In the 35th minute Granite Hills came close to scoring with a hard shot off the left post.

In the second half in the 54th minute Ghoddousi lofted a 60-yard free kick into the box that was headed into the goal by senior Rayan Heyati for his 9th goal of the season. It was Ghoddousi’s team high 13th assist of the season.

Senior goalkeeper Lucca Clouthier was rarely challenged making just three saves and recording his eighth shutout of the season.

Granite Hills finished the season with an 18-6-5 record.
