UCI Anteaters capture 30th victory and advance to NIT quarterfinal round Wednesday

UC Irvine’s men’s basketball team has advanced to the NIT quarterfinals for the first time in program history and will host UAB Wednesday at 6 p.m. at the Bren Events Center.

The game will be televised by ESPN-2.

Sunday night, Justin Hohn scored a season high 22 points to lead top-seeded UC Irvine to a 66-61 victory over Jacksonville State in the second round at the Bren Events Center..

UCI is 30-6, its second 30-win season in program history and second under the helm of head coach Russell Turner. UCI is the eighth team in the nation to hit the milestone this season, according to UCI officials.

The Anteaters out-scored the Gamecocks 13-6 in the final 5:20 of Sunday’s game. UCI made 7-of -7 free throws while Jacksonville State made 3-of-7.
 
Hohn made 7-of-15 field goals and matched his career-high with four three-pointers. He also went 4-of-5 from the free throw line and grabbed three rebounds.

Center Bent Leuchte scored 10 points, hitting 4-of-4 from the free throw line, and grabbed seven rebounds. Guard Myles Che had 11 points and three 3-pointers, forward Devin Tillis had a team-high nine rebounds and guard Torian Lee had eight points.

The UCI-UAB winner advances to the semifinals vs. the winner of the Oklahoma State-North Texas winner on Tuesday, April 1 at Hinkle Fieldhouse in Indianapolis, Ind. The Oklahoma State-North Texas game will be played Tuesday.
