Trabuco Hills High School baseball coach Michael Burns joined Mustang seniors Sunday on the South Coast League-Sea View League team for the Ryan Lemmon Senior Showcase in what was his final game representing the Mustangs.

Burns said Sunday he has resigned as the head coach after leading Trabuco Hills to a 17-11 overall record and 7-5 mark in the South Coast League this past season. He will continue to teach business and Spanish at Trabuco Hills.

“I’m still going to be teaching, still love baseball, it’s just that wearing all the hats of a head coach started grinding on me a little bit,” Burns said. “I got a senior (Dusty) graduating from Trabuco, he was one of our pitchers and an 11-year-old.

“I’ll still hopefully end up coaching somewhere, you will see me hopefully as an assistant somewhere. Teaching the game is still my passion, it might be an 11-and-under situation for a year or so and then see where he (his younger son) is going to high school and figure it out.”

Burns coached at Trabuco Hills for 23 years, 17 as a head coach.

“My favorite is just the school community there,” Burns said. “We have all kinds of on-campus coaches and a great administration. We’ve had a great ride, it’s my passion, I love teaching the game, I love being around kids of this age, that was a joy and a pleasure.”

Before that, he was the first head coach at Beckman for three years.

No replacement has been made. Interviews are schedules this week, Burns said.
