Tesoro High School’s boys basketball team built a 13-point halftime lead, then broke the game open in the third quarter and went on to defeat host Tustin 50-38 Monday night in the third place game of the Tustin Classic.
The Titans ( 13-6) jumped out to a 47-27 lead after three quarters and coasted the rest of the way.
Dean Mika scored 13 points, Anish Pagidyala scored 12 points and Max Draper and Randy Wandji scored seven points each to lead Tesoro.
Mika and Pagidyala were named to the all-tournament team.
“I was proud of our guys defense, we limited the touches of their big and our four and five men had their best game of the year,” said Tesoro Coach Steve Garrett. “I feel like we always do that at Tustin, 3-1. It was a good week and it’s a great tournament. Ringo (Bossenmeyer) does a great job and it’s a great gym to play in and a great way to try and grow as a team before league.”
Tustin finished the tournament 2-2 and had a fairly successful non-league schedule before struggling Monday. The Tillers (13-6) were led by Daniel Molina, who had nine points on three 3-pointers and Terrelle Morales, who had eight points.
“When your opponent plays with far more purpose, intent, physicality and attention to detail it makes for an extremely discouraging night,” Tustin Coach Ringo Bossenmeyer said a couple hours after the game. “We absolutely failed as a team to show any type of pride whatsoever in representing the standards that Tustin basketball has long been known for.
“A truly disappointing game. I apologize to anyone in attendance for our blatantly uninspiring performance and to Coach Garrett and the Tesoro basketball program for not giving them any type of resistance that could possibly make them better for their upcoming league competition.”
