Rep. Michelle Steel (R-CA) issued the following statement in response to being re-appointed to the Congressional-Executive Commission on China (CECC) by Speaker of the House Kevin McCarthy (CA-20). Rep. Steel was first appointed to the CEEC in the 117th Congress.
“I am honored to continue my work with the Congressional-Executive Commission on China to hold The Chinese Communist Party accountable for its horrific violations of human rights,” said Rep. Steel. “As we work with free nations around the globe to address strategic competition with China, we must continue to expose the crimes the CCP commits against its own people. My parents fled North Korea to escape communism. This Commission exists to expose the CCPs abuses to the world. I am dedicated to being a voice for the repressed minorities of China and all those who long for freedom yet continue to suffer at the hands of oppressive Communist regimes.”
Background
The bicameral, bipartisan group was established in 2000. Commission members work together to monitor China’s compliance with international human rights standards, encourage the development of the rule of law and to establish and maintain a list of victims of human rights abuses in China.
The Commission submits an annual report to the President and Congress. The Commission’s 2022 report detailed the CCP’s work to censure, detain, and torture anyone who dare speak out against the CCP including critics of the regime’s policies, human rights lawyers, free speech advocates, and women’s rights defenders. The report also brought to light work to silence anyone critical of the CCP’s human rights abuses including U.S. citizens and the United Nations. Read more here.
