On March 5, 2023, at approximately 6:50 p.m., officers were dispatched to the 5200 block of Atlantic Avenue regarding a stabbing in progress, which resulted in an officer-involved shooting.
Preliminary investigation revealed the suspect stabbed the victim multiple times. As the officer arrived on scene, the suspect was stabbing the victim. During the stabbing, the officer gave commands for the suspect to drop the knife, the suspect refused, and an officer-involved shooting occurred. The suspect was struck by gunfire as a result of the officer-involved shooting.
Responding officers rendered aid to the suspect and the stabbing victim.
The Long Beach Fire Department (LBFD) arrived on scene and transported the suspect to a local hospital where he is listed in critical, but stable condition.

No officers or additional community members were injured during the incident.
Detectives are investigating if the suspect and the victim knew each other and the motive for the stabbing.
A knife was recovered on scene.
The officer was equipped with a body-worn camera (BWC), however, the BWC was not activated until after the officer-involved shooting occurred. LBPD is in the process of reviewing the footage and will make that available to the public as soon as possible.
As with all officer-involved shooting incidents, the Department will be conducting a full and thorough multi-level review of the incident. The Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office will conduct an independent investigation of the incident, as they do with all officer-involved shootings that result in injury or death.
