Orange Coast College’s Planetarium is introducing a new monthly lecture series that will be open to the public, featuring guests discussing popular topics in astronomy and space science.
The Skylark series will debut on Friday, Sept. 23 at 6 p.m. with a lecture by Dr. Abhimat Gautam, an astronomer from the University of California, Los Angeles. Dr. Gautam will discuss a project he participated in which identified a supermassive black hole in the center of the Milky Way and which won the 2020 Nobel Prize in physics. He also will demonstrate how to find the center of the Milky Way in the night sky, how astronomers observe the center of the universe using powerful telescopes, and recent exciting discoveries of other unique objects located in our home galaxy.
Dr. Gautam’s lecture will be followed by a question-and-answer session. The Skylark series is free to attend, however guests must have tickets, and there will be a reception before and after the lecture.
