On June 14, 1925, a sudden squall capsized a fishing vessel off the coast of Corona del Mar. In a display of incredible courage, legendary competition swimmer, lifeguard and surfer Duke Kahanamoku—alongside a crew of fellow surfers—braved the turbulent surf to rescue 12 fishermen from a fishing vessel that capsized in heavy surf while it was attempting to enter the city’s harbor.

Join Sherman Library & Gardens on June 14, 2025 from 6 to 9 p.m. for a special evening that commemorates the legacy of bravery, community, and ocean stewardship. A keynote conversation with Paul Burnet, author and co-owner of Surfside Sports, will showcase stories of the rescue, its impact, and the spirit of aloha that lives on today. Enjoy live music by Kerry and the Surftones, plus a no-host bar and a taco dinner from The Taco Guy (available for purchase).

Participating nonprofits for the evening will include: The Surfrider Foundation, the Ben Carlson Foundation, and Surfing Heritage and Culture Center.

Tickets are $40 for Sherman Library & Gardens members and $50 for non-members. More information and tickets can be purchased at https://thesherman.org/event/the-great-rescue-of-1925-centennial-commemoration.

About Sherman Library & Gardens

Sherman Library & Gardens is a non-profit that has been deeply rooted in Orange County, California for over half of a century, serving the community as a sanctuary and education beacon for history and beauty.

Founded in 1966 by Arnold Haskell, and named for his friend and mentor, Moses Hazeltine Sherman, this iconic institution serves as a guardian of regional history and artifacts, a living library of plants both native and exotic, and a conservator of artistic works influenced by and produced in the Pacific Southwest.

Today, Sherman Library & Gardens is a monument to Haskell’s dream of an educational and cultural center including a premier botanical garden and outstanding research library. Sherman Library & Gardens was recently recognized by the Newport Beach City Council with a proclamation, naming Sherman Library & Gardens as the “Cultural Hub” of Corona del Mar.
