Segerstrom High School’s boys basketball team claimed the outright Golden West League championship, the first league title for the program since 2011.
The Jaguars secured the outright crown by defeating Katella 48-47 Tuesday night at Katella.
Chris Negrete led Segerstrom (13-11, 5-4) with 21 points. Heber Quero added seven points.
“It feels great to clinch a league title,” Segerstrom’s first-year coach Eddie Andrade said. “We didn’t start off so good and Katella’s number 22 (Dominic Dix) was making big shots. He even made a big shot towards the end of the game to cut the lead to one with a few seconds left.
“Our guys never gave up even being down double digits at one point. We had multiple guys step up and make big plays that helped take the lead and clinch that win. I’m proud of the guys and they deserve all the recognition for the win.”
Katella needed to win its final two games in order to share the title with Segerstrom.
