The 25th Annual Sunset Beach Woman’s Club Chili Cook Off on Saturday, Sept. 21, was “the busiest, yet funnest chili cook off,” receiving rave reviews, according to Dawn McCormack, the club’s parliamentarian and president emeritus. McCormack shared her enthusiasm with attendees such as famed singer, Dean Torrence (Jan and Dean), the Huntington Beach mayor, and other local dignitaries.
Held at the Sunset Beach Community Center, the event drew 800 people who sampled and voted for their favorite chili, bid on live auction items and danced to the music of Cat Reed and The Back Alley.
“The 2024 Sunset Beach Chili Cook Off exceeded our goals, and we received countless compliments on how fun it was,” said Patricia Rogers, Sunset Beach Woman’s Club co-president. “Best yet, the funds from the event benefit local students with scholarships we provide.”
On hand to support this special cause were Huntington Beach Mayor Gracey Van Der Mark, HB City Council Member Natalie Moser and Kelly Miller, President and CEO of Visit Huntington Beach. Tommy Teissere was auctioneer for the event and his wife, Sunset Beach Woman’s Club Co-President Cheryl Coleman, tallied the list of winners.
According to Coleman the winners were: Judge’s Choice First Place Redneck Chili, Second Place Mother’s and Third Place O’Connell’s. In the People’s Choice Awards first place winner was Sentinels (Lifeguards), second place went to Outlaws and third place honors were presented to EV Bistro (Mr. and Mrs.).The best decorated booth went to Outlaws, Nauti Yachty (Huntington Harbour Yacht Club) came in second and EV Bistro (Mr. and Mrs.) rounded out the contest in third place.
