Edward Alexander Dominguez, a 33-year-old man, pleaded guilty and was immediately sentenced on Thursday to 19 years in prison for stabbing his 79-year-old grandmother in Santa Ana.
This was the second time he was convicted of attacking his grandmother.
Dominguez pleaded guilty to attempted murder with sentencing enhancements for attempted premeditated murder, causing great bodily injury on an elder and the personal use of a deadly weapon.
Orange County Superior Court Judge Larry Yellin offered a plea deal to Dominguez, which gave him credit for 1,779 days behind bars, which comes to almost five years.
Dominguez used two knives in the attack on his grandmother, who was stabbed about 4:25 p.m. Oct. 8, 2020 in the 700 block of North Minter Street, according to the SAPD.
Dominguez also fought with someone at the scene who had intervened to protect his grandmother and he then left the residence. He was arrested nearby a short time later.
Dominguez pleaded guilty in 2019 to attacking his grandmother on June 14, 2018, according to court records.
He was sentenced to four years in prison for that attack and he was given credit for 866 days behind bars in 2019.
On June 14, 2018, he was home with his grandmother in her Santa Ana apartment when he suddenly “grabbed her by her hair and he said, `I want $20 or I’ll kill you,”‘ according to the prosecutors.
The prosecutors also alleged that Dominguez “threw his grandmother against a metal table and punched her in the face.”
Dominguez also “tried to strangle” his grandmother as she struggled with him and he then “threw her to the floor,” according to the prosecutors.
The victim’s shouts for help brought help from her neighbors, the prosecutors said.
Dominguez told police he wanted the money to buy drugs and had been regularly using methamphetamine, prosecutors said.
