Rocker Sammy Hagar received the 2,779th star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame on Tuesday morning.
Guy Fieri served as the event’s emcee as Hagar’s longtime manager, Tom Consolo, and friend, singer John Mayer, took to the podium to offer kind words about the rockstar.
“Sammy your work ethic is unlike, honestly, anything I’ve ever seen. When we first started out together you called me early in the day and you said ‘are your sleeves rolled up?’ Since that day, they’ve never come down,” Consolo said. “You are the idea guy, you’ve always got one. We may kick something around on the phone but by the time we’ve hung up you’ve got it 100% formed and it’s ready for execution.”
The moment wasn’t lost on Hagar.
He revealed that his mom was “in love with the Walk of Fame in the ’60s.”
“We didn’t have anything, maybe enough gas money to make it to the beach. Four kids raised by a single mom and she would want to come down here and see the movie stars. She was really in love with the movie industry and Clark Gable and those guys,” he explained.
“I remember seeing this thing and to think, it was way beyond a dream. You have dreams and then you have the dream that you didn’t dream,” he gushed. “This is one of those dreams that I didn’t dream and- wow.”
For the past 50 years, the Red Rocker has been a musical powerhouse.
In the early ’70s, he broke onto the scene with the band Montrose. He went solo before signing on as the lead singer of Van Halen from the mid-’80s to the early ’90s. He later rocked out with Los Tres Gusanos, Sammy Hagar and the Waboritas, Planet Us. Now he’s part of the super bands Chicken Foot and Sammy Hagar and the Circle.
He is also a gifted songwriter who penned “I Can’t Drive 55,” “Right Now” and “Why Can’t This Be Love.” The Grammy-award-winning artist is also a member of the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame.
Known for his good-time persona, Mayer debunked claims that the rocker parties. “He celebrates,” the singer clarified.
“He celebrates being alive. He celebrates his friends, their talents, and their accomplishments. He celebrates that celebration itself as a thing. Have a good time all the time!”
Mayer then explained how Hagar took that part of his personality and marketed it in other ways.
In 1990 he opened Cabo Wabo Cantina in Cabo San Lucas, Mexico. He later launched Cabo Wabo Tequila, Sammy’s Beach Bar Rum, Santo Spirits, Sammy’s Beach Bar Cocktails and Red Rocker Brewing Co.
Hagar’s star is located on the corner of Hollywood Boulevard and Argyle Avenue.
