Rep. Michelle Steel (CA-45) issued the following statement in response to President Joe Biden’s 2023 State of the Union Address.

“For the past two years, President Joe Biden has continually ignored or made excuses for the many crises this nation currently faces including a sky high national debt, out of control spending, a compromised southern border, and direct threats from the CCP,” said Steel. “Unfortunately, this year’s State of the Union was no different. Over 40% of Americans say they are worse off financially than when President Biden took office. One party rule has destroyed our economy, but Republicans are already working to bring spending under control to bring down prices and raise workforce participation.

While President Biden claims to take the threat of the Chinese Communist Party seriously, his recent handling of the Chinese spy balloon that traversed the U.S. before getting shot down is gravely concerning. I urge President Biden to work with Republicans in Congress to find real solutions to the CCP’s increasingly brazen contempt for our national sovereignty. We must implement an all-of-government approach to successfully combat the CCP’s aggression against all freedom loving nations. On the bipartisan House Select Committee, we will address China’s ongoing effort to spy on Americans, appalling human rights abuses, predatory trade practices, and support for bad actors including Russia, North Korea, and Iran. I encourage the Biden Administration to work with us to find real solutions. The world is watching how we protect democracy. It is vital that we respond to any threats with strength, instead of empty words.”
