Portola High School’s girls tennis team, coached by Natasha Schottland, has some high hopes for the season.
The Bulldogs are off to a 6-0 start with victories over Corona del Mar (11-7), Santa Margarita (6-2), Beckman (11-7) and Peninsula (10-8).
“We have a fairly young team with a lot of juniors who have been on the team for several years,” Schottland said. “Top players include Kylie Nguyen (sister of CIF individual champion Kenzie Nguyen), Leanna Roman, Payton Nguyen and a new addition from Great Britain, Imani Shah.”
The players and coach have set high goals for the season.
“Our main goal as a team is to make it far in CIF playoffs,” Schottland said. “For the past four years girls tennis has lost in the first round of team playoffs so we would love to go far this season. Our other team goal is to send a few individuals through to CIF as well since we have some strong players.
“We are looking forward to playing the Point Loma tournament in San Diego at the end of the month and seeing the competition in our league. Overall we are off to a strong start and are excited to see what the rest of season has to offer.”
