Internationally celebrated poet Javier Zamora will be featured at Long Beach State on March 18, 2022 for the 6th Annual Helena Maria Viramontes Annual Lecture on Latina/o Literature. Zamora will lead a creative writing workshop for selected students and will do a virtual public reading.
“The Helena María Viramontes Annual Lectures in Latina/o Literature are important events in the life of CSULB,” said President Jane Close Conoley. “They allow us to create new experiences and broaden existing ones for the campus community, as well as the communities we serve. As our nation continues struggling with its history, providing attendees with opportunities to hear from and engage with Javier Zamora is remarkable and timely.”
Zamora was a 2018-2019 Radcliffe Fellow at Harvard University and holds fellowships from CantoMundo, Colgate University (Olive B. O’Connor), MacDowell, Macondo, the National Endowment for the Arts, Poetry Foundation (Ruth Lilly), Stanford University (Stegner), and Yaddo. He is the recipient of a 2017 Lannan Literary Fellowship, the 2017 Narrative Prize, and the 2016 Barnes & Noble Writer for Writers Award for his work in the Undocupoets Campaign.
“This year’s author” stated Dean David Wallace, “ is an award-winning poet whose work is particularly relevant to undocumented people. Each year I look forward to this lecture not only for the caliber of writers it brings to campus but also for the community of faculty, students, staff, and community members it attracts —Javier Zamora—is no exception.”
The lecture series is dedicated to the creation of a public space for community members, faculty, staff, and students to engage with and discuss issues related to Latina/o literature and culture with some of the most important writers and scholars in the field. Now in its 6th year, the annual lecture has garnered widespread interest and support on campus and in the broader Long Beach, Los Angeles, and Orange County communities that CSU Long Beach serves. Chicano and Latino Studies Department Chair Rigoberto Rodriguez stated, “Literature expresses the richness, complexity, and uniqueness of our community’s experiences, dreams, and imaginations. With sincere humility, we thank Helena Maria Viramontes—whose literary work has shaped our field and culture—for trusting us with her name for this event.
