Troy High School’s football team wrapped up non-league play Friday night, defeating Segerstrom 42-10 at Fullerton.
The Warriors were in control from the start and jumped out to a 35-3 lead after three quarters.
“I am extremely proud of the way we played,” said Troy Coach Michael Echaves on Saturday. “Our defense especially stepped up and held a very talented Segerstrom offense all night to only 310 total yards.”
Troy (4-1) was led by quarterback Rudy Alcala who completed 18 of 23 passes for 244 yards and four touchdowns, according to the coach. Wide receiver Vander Ploog had 12 catches for 194 yards and four TDs.

Ethan Mundt rushed for 83 yards on 15 carries and Charles Rippon rushed for 99 yards on nine carries and a touchdown. Noah Tapia had three rushes for 37 yards and a TD for Troy, which had 476 yards of total offense.
Cameron Baker had an interception for the Warriors.
Diego Hernandez had a field goal and Louis Garcia connected with Nicholas Cervantes for the only TD for Segerstrom (3-2).
“We didn’t play our best game as the scoreboard reflects,” Segerstrom Coach Joseph Tagaloa said Saturday. “Take nothing away from Troy, they are a good football team. Last night we were plagued by too many mistakes and penalties. We need to do a better job finishing.
“Our offense was able to move the ball, but struggled to find the end zone. We had several big plays negated by penalties which cost us. At the end of the day we have to be more disciplined on offense.
“Defensively, we played tough, but gave up too many big plays. We have to do a better job getting stops so that are offense can take over. Our special teams played well all night. Unfortunately your special teams unit cannot be the only ones who play well, if you’re gonna have success.”
The Jaguars will now prepare for their Kappa League opener with St. Margaret’s Friday night at home.
“This was our last non-league game and it showed us a lot about ourselves and what we need to fix,” Tagaloa said. “We’re going to get back at it and prepare for next week’s league opener. At the end of the day, our goal is to compete for the league championship and that is something that we can still accomplish as long as were able to learn from our mistakes and grow as a team. I am looking forward to seeing our players resilience and grit. Next week is going to be a tough task in St. Margaret’s but I’m excited for the challenge.”
Troy opens Iota League play at Sonora Friday night.
