Tesoro High School’s football team, after an opening 34-13 victory over Murrieta Mesa in Mike Zangl’s debut as head coach, hosts San Marcos Friday night at 7 in a non-league game.
“We are playing a very talented San Marcos team from the San Diego Section,” Zangl said Tuesday. “They have multiple D-1 kids; explosive offense and physical defense. Each week is going to be a bigger challenge for us.”
In the opening game Friday night, Tesoro’s offense had 602 total yards with a school record 525 yards by senior quarterback Cash O’Byrne, who threw five touchdown passes.

“We started a tad slow on both sides of the ball. Murrieta Mesa came out in some stuff we were not prepared for, but our coaching staff and kids made some great adjustments,” Zangl said.
Tesoro’s defense held Murrieta Mesa to 28 yards rushing.
Tesoro’s offense was dominant, racking up 602 total yards.
Braiden Vaca led Tesoro with nine catches for 128 receiving yards, Isaiah Abbott caught seven balls for 108 yards and a score, Tanner Silber had 106 yards receiving, junior Brayden White scored on a second half flea flicker and senior Campbell Schamel added 92 yards in receiving and two touchdowns to lead the Titans.
“Offensively Cash O’Byrne set a school record with 525 passing yards,” Zangl said. “Four different receivers scored TDs: Campbell Schamel, Isaiah Abbott, Tanner Silber and Brayden White.”
O’Byrne, Wyatt Brady and Nic Brubaker led the Titans ground attack, which had 77 yards on 17 carries.
The Titans’ defense limited Murrieta Mesa 246 total yards. Tesoro’s defensive line had three sacks and consistently putting pressure on Murrieta Mesa’s quarterback.
Grant Haefner and Luke Travis were the defensive standouts. Tesoro’s defense had eight tackles.
