“Last night was quite the game,” said Segerstrom Coach Joseph Tagaloa on Saturday. “Our guys came out and played really hard vs. a tough Westminster team.
“Our players really came together to earn a hard fought victory. Offensively we did not play our best game, but we were able to make plays when we needed to in order to keep drives alive. There were several key plays in each of our scoring drives that ended with Ayden Morales scoring three rushing touchdowns, Luis Prado adding another rushing touchdown and Diego Garcia catching one as well.”
The defense was also solid, Tagaloa said.
“Upfront the offensive line battle all night to create openings for our skill guys to make plays,” he said. “I am proud of the effort that we collectively brought last night. Guys like Jayden Tran, Nathan Almazan and Vicente Rivera stepped up when we needed them to.
“Defensively our guys played complimentary football. Our pass rush was able to put pressure on the quarterback and our secondary battle all night. We were able to get several big stops and an interception by Ayden Morales that really set the tone for the game.
“Our special teams played well tonight with Elio Castrejon being perfect on all of his PAT attempts and Joseph Garcia flying down to make several tackles on our kick off team.”
The Jaguars will now prepare for the match-up with defending league champion Brea Olinda. Segerstrom finished second in the league last year.
“After a solid win last night we will examine the film to make sure we are ready to go to Brea next week and compete,” Tagaloa said.
Both Brea Olinda and Segerstrom will advance to the CIF playoffs based on their strong overall records and likely high league standings.
Westminster (3-5, 1-2) plays at Esperanza Friday night.
