Despite seeing his team lose to California of Whittier 21-0 Friday night, Segerstrom Coach Joseph Tagaloa said was pleased how his team, 1-2 after three weeks, battled on the road.

“I am extremely proud of the effort we gave last night,” he said Saturday. “There wasn’t a lot that went our way, but our guys kept fighting. They made no excuses and just kept competing. Playing on the road with several key players out and some questionable calls that went against us, including an 80-yard TD run called back, and still our guys showed true grit and resilience.

“At the end of the night we did not make enough plays to get the victory, but we showed that no matter what the situation was, we are going to compete.”

A number of players stood out

“Damien Orejel played his heart out all night on the defensive side of the ball and Noah Tagaloa led the offensive attack both running and receiving,” Tagaloa said.

California, inspired by a big, enthusiastic home crowd, improved its record to 2-1.

Segerstrom will try and bounced back when it faces El Modena on the road Friday night.

“Next week we will go on the road against a solid El Modena team and I am excited to see how our guys will step up to meet the challenge,” Tagaloa said.
