PHOTOS: Late touchdown pass helps Calvary Chapel win thriller over Carpinteria

Calvary Chapel High School’s football team rallied with a big play, 80-yard touchdown pass with less than two minutes left and held on for 20-19 non-league road victory Friday night over Carpenteria.

In the first quarter, Carpinteria took opening drive down the field until Calvary Chapel’s Matt Lux tipped a pass by Carpinteria’s Talon Trumble and Gavin Ghahyasi intercepted on the Eagles’ 5-yard line to end the drive.

Carpinteria moved ahead 7-0 in the second quarter on a 45-yard run by Isaya Gonzalez and a conversion.

Calvary Chapel (2-2) tied the game 7-7 on a 10-yard TD pass from Matt Peters to Ghahyasi in the second quarter.

In the third quarter, Carpinteria took a 10-7 lead on a 23-yard field goal by Raul Reyes. Calvary Chapel took the lead 13-10 on Matt Peters 9-yard TD run but missed the extra point.

Carpinteria tied the game in the fourth quarter on a 32-yard field goal by Reyes.

Calvary Chapel had more chance with two minutes left in the game and the ball on its own 20-yard line. Peters connected with wide receiver Jackson Pellkofer on an 80-yard touchdown pass play putting the Eagles ahead 20-13.

Carpinteria cut the lead to 20-19 on a 38-yard TD pass from Trumble to Judah Torres. The PAT was blocked by the Eagles’ Eric Rommel and Calvary Chapel held onto a one-point lead.

Carpinteria got the ball back but missed a 40 yard field goal with under 10 seconds remaining.
