It was quite a start to the Orange Coast League season for Calvary Chapel’s football team.

The Eagles rallied in the final minute and defeated Costa Mesa 38-37 Thursday night in the league opener at Segerstrom. Quarterback Matt Peters scored the game-winning two-point conversion with 12 seconds left to lift Calvary Chapel to the win.

“Last night was incredible,” said Coach Jack McInally. “Our guys left it all on the field and were led by our quarterback Matt Peters. He opened the game with a 70-yard touchdown run and never slowed down.

“We were hurt by some penalties and turnovers, but we battled all game. Costa Mesa was really prepared, and their kids really played well.”

Costa Mesa (2-3) scored with about 1:30 remaining to take the lead but Calvary Chapel (2-3) still had time.

“Charles Sparks had a great touchdown rush with 12 seconds to go on a great block by Pops Soto,” McInally said. “Our two-point conversion doesn’t happen without our left tackle, Manny Wright Jr., sealing the edge so Matt could get around. It was an incredible team win.”
