On Dec. 31, 2022, at approximately 6:44 p.m. officers were dispatched to the area of Pacific Avenue and 27th Street regarding injury hit-and-run traffic collision between a vehicle and a pedestrian, which resulted in the death of a pedestrian.
Officers located a Honda Odyssey driven by a 78-year-old male resident of Long Beach that had driven over the body of a pedestrian in the roadway. The Long Beach Fire Department responded to the scene, lifted and stabilized the vehicle, and determined the pedestrian trapped underneath the vehicle was deceased.
Officers also located a Hyundai Elantra driven by a 27-year-old male resident of Long Beach that had also driven over the pedestrian.
The preliminary investigation revealed an unknown vehicle was traveling northbound on Pacific Avenue when it struck a pedestrian who was crossing Pacific Avenue in the north crosswalk. The collision caused the pedestrian to fall into the number two lane of northbound Pacific Avenue, north of 27th Street. That vehicle then fled the scene.
The pedestrian was struck again by a Hyundai Elantra while lying in the number two lane of northbound Pacific Avenue. The driver of the Hyundai pulled over, contacted police, and cooperated with the investigation.
The pedestrian was then struck again by a Honda Odyssey and dragged to the area of Spring Street and Pacific Avenue. The driver was unaware of the collision and a witness stopped the driver of the Honda Odyssey. The driver cooperated with the investigation.
The pedestrian’s identity is unknown, and the Los Angeles Coroner’s Office will conduct their own investigation and identify the pedestrian.
