On Jan. 1, 2023, at approximately 11:10 p.m., officers were dispatched to the area of Harbor Scenic Drive and Ocean Boulevard regarding a call to assist the Long Beach Fire Department with a pedestrian down in the roadway after being struck by a vehicle, which resulted in the death of a male adult.

When officers arrived, the Long Beach Fire Department was already on scene. They advised officers that the pedestrian had been determined deceased at the scene and it appeared he had been struck by a vehicle.

While officers were conducting their investigation, the driver of the vehicle that struck the pedestrian contacted police and cooperated with the investigation.

The preliminary investigation revealed a 2013 Nissan Altima, driven by a 20-year-old resident of Lakewood, was traveling northbound on Harbor Scenic Drive towards the Ocean Boulevard bridge when he struck a pedestrian who was attempting to cross westbound, on foot, across the lanes of traffic under the Ocean Boulevard Bridge.

The driver had a valid driver’s license and proof of insurance. Speed, distracted driving, and driving under the influence do not appear to be factors in this collision.

The pedestrian’s identity is unknown; the Los Angeles County Coroner’s Office will conduct their own investigation and identify the pedestrian.
