On Dec. 31, 2022 at approximately 5:22 p.m., officers were dispatched to the area of 300 block of E. Market Street regarding an injury traffic collision, which resulted in the death of a male adult.

When officers arrived, they determined a pedestrian had been struck by a vehicle. Officers rendered aid to the injured pedestrian until the Long Beach Fire Department responded and transported him to a local hospital. The pedestrian succumbed to his injuries a short time later at the hospital.

The preliminary investigation revealed that a 2013 Lexus was being driven by 33-year-old David Grace of Los Angeles. Grace was traveling at a high rate of speed eastbound on Market Street. A 62-year-old resident of Long Beach was pushing his disabled 1991 Dodge van alongside his 19-year-old daughter, when Grace struck the Dodge van, pinning the male victim between the Lexus and the Dodge. The impact then caused the Dodge to collide into an unoccupied, parked Nissan truck. The 19-year-old daughter was not injured in the collision.

Grace was determined to be under the influence of alcohol and had an expired California Driver License. He was booked for vehicular manslaughter and driving under the influence.

The identity of the pedestrian is being withheld pending next of kin notification.
