Early today, Jan. 26, 2025, a little before 3 a.m., Newport Beach Police advised the Costa Mesa Police Department that they were in pursuit of a suspect, who had been in their city attempting to steal vehicles. The suspect had fled to Costa Mesa, in the area of E. 19th Street and Santa Ana Avenue.
Moments later, the Newport Beach Police advised that the suspect vehicle had crashed into an Edison power pole at the intersection of Santa Ana Avenue and 22nd Street. CMPD and Costa Mesa Fire & Rescue responded to the scene.
The driver and a rear passenger were injured and transported to a nearby hospital for treatment. The front passenger was not responsive and was pronounced deceased at the scene. The identity of that passenger will not be released pending next of kin notification.
The Major Accident Investigations Team (MAIT) responded to the scene to conduct their investigation. Due to the rain, the street closures were delayed but the area is now clear.
The City crew and SoCal Edison also responded to scene.
The driver, Anthony Samayoa, 20, Carson, has been arrested for vehicular homicide, felony DUI, felony evasion, and attempted vehicle theft.
