Orange County CHP offices unite to enhance safety for all motorists on I-5

The California Highway Patrol’s (CHP) Santa Ana, Westminster, and San Juan Capistrano Area offices recently collaborated on a traffic safety campaign focused on reducing fatalities and serious injuries on our roadways. This coordinated education and enforcement effort was created to enhance safety efforts on Orange County roadways, while continuing to make California a safe place to live, work, and travel.

The traffic safety campaign follows a significant increase in speed-related incidents and traffic fatalities in 2021. Estimates from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) showed more than 4,258 people died in motor vehicle traffic crashes in California last year. This is an increase of 10.7 percent from 2020.

“Creating a safer highway environment and reducing the number of people killed and injured in crashes is the shared responsibility of all motorists,” said CHP Border Division Chief Scott Parker. “This campaign was designed to reinforce the message that excessive speed and unsafe driving are a
danger to everyone on the roadway.”

In response to the increase in fatal motor vehicle traffic crashes, the CHP’s Santa Ana, Westminster, and San Juan Capistrano Area offices recently conducted proactive enforcement operations using motorcycle officers along the Interstate 5 corridor in Orange County. CHP officers focused on traffic violations that have led to tragedy on our highways. In addition to speed, officers were on the lookout for seat belt and child safety seat violations, evidence of distracted driving, and driving under the influence.

The efforts of the June 16, 2022, enforcement operation on I-5 among the three CHP Area offices in Orange County resulted in 211 citations issued, which include speed, distracted driving, and seat belt violations.

The CHP reminds motorists to follow these basic traffic safety rules: always wear a seat belt, drive at a speed safe for traffic conditions, eliminate distractions while driving, and always designate a sober driver.

The mission of the CHP is to provide the highest level of Safety, Service, and Security.
