The California Department of Housing and Community Development awarded the Counties of Orange and San Diego $1,158,277 from the 2021 Emergency Solutions Grant (ESG) program which provides funds for a variety of activities to address homelessness as authorized under the federal Homeless Emergency Assistance and Rapid Transition to Housing (HEARTH) Act of 2009. Senator Patricia Bates (R-Laguna Niguel) issued the following statement:
“California is home to 12% of the U.S. population, but accounts for roughly 30% of the nation’s homeless population. Across the state, cities and counties are in desperate need of additional resources to meet the needs of a growing population. The grant funding provided by the ESG program will allow Orange and San Diego Counties to not only focus on their current homeless populations, but also add to their ongoing efforts to curb homelessness within their jurisdictions.”
The California Housing and Community Development receives federal ESG funds from the United States Department of Housing and Urban Development for the purposes of eliminating homelessness by focusing on assisting individuals and families to achieve economic and social independence through rapid rehousing assistance, emergency shelters, homelessness prevention and street outreach services as well as supportive services including counseling, substance abuse treatment, and job training.
