Boys basketball

CHALLENGE FOR CHOC

University 79, Fullerton 78: Christian DeBarge stole the ball in the back-court and passed the ball to Isaac Evans for a layup with five seconds left to lift the Trojans to the win Saturday at Sunny Hills. DeBarge scored 26 points to lead University (6-11). Andrew Bogard added 19 points making 9 of 10 field goals. Evans scored 16 points and Shervin Moarrefian had 13 points.

Fullerton (8-11) was led by Baylor Wilks, who had 21 points. Jordan Myvett added 16 points, Isaiah Edwards 13 points and Jeremy Guillen 12 points for the Tribe.

Northwood 62, Troy 58: The Timberwolves (13-5) were led by Zaid Yunis, who had 13 points and five rebounds and Ryan Abaye, who had 13 points, eight assists and three steals.

Sonora 80, Portola 62: Sonora had outstanding three-point shooting in the win. Ricky Esparza, Riley Hale, Eric Castillo and Tyler Homquist led the Raiders.

Sunny Hills 84, Whittier Christian 59

Santa Ana 69, Buena Park 59

La Habra 52, Woodbridge 40

SOCAL SHOWDOWN

Windward 63, Foothill 45: Foothill (12-7) was led by Blake Pearson who had 13 points and Travis Paleo who had 11 points. Isaiah Bernard added nine points and seven rebounds.

TAKE FLIGHT CHALLENGE

Redondo Union 72, Crean Lutheran 64: The Saints (8-8 overall) were led by Kaiden Bailey, who had 37 points and reached the 1,000-point mark in his career in his sophomore season. Jacob Majok added 12 points and Braeden Davidson nine points for the Saints.

TRINITY LEAGUE

Mater Dei 83, St. John Bosco 62: The Monarchs (17-1, 3-0) won the Trinity League game Saturday which was part of the Coastal Catholic Classic at Crypto.com Arena. Brannon Martinsen had 19 points, Brandon Benjamin 18 points, Luke Barnett 16 points and four 3-pointers and Owen Verna 15 points to lead Mater Dei.

REAL RUN CLASSIC

Cypress 70, Arcadia 50: Ryan Gov scored 16 points and was named the game’s MVP leading Cypress (13-5) to the win. Jonah Kim had 15 points and Michael Wright 13 points for the Centurions.

“We played well as team defensively tonight,” said Cypress Coach Derek Mitchell. “The guys were engaged and locked in. Our second unit came and really turned up the defensive intensity which allowed us to increase the lead.”

Cypress was coming off a league victory over Tustin on Friday.

BSN SHOWCASE

Pacifica Christian 68, Modesto Christian 61 (OT): Pacifica Christian was led by Logan Stewart, who had 33 points and 12 rebounds. EJ Spillman had 13 points and six assists, Alex Stewart eight points and 12 rebounds and Hudson Reynolds eight points, nine rebounds and five steals.

NON-LEAGUE

Beckman 68, Capo Valley Christian 64: The Patriots were led by Caydon Do, who had 16 points. Adrian Ibarra added 14 points, Iziah Valenzuela 12 points and Moe Hernandez 10 points.

“We went down 16-2 in the first two minutes of the game,” said Beckman Coach Lucas Armstrong. “Give Capo Valley Christian credit, they came ready to play and we didn’t. We battled back the whole game and used a big second half (40-28) to get control of the game. Really proud of our kids’ fight in the second half tonight, especially Adrian Ibarra. He stepped up huge for us and was rock solid down the stretch.”

Girls basketball

Sunny Hills 49, Canyon 38: Canyon was led by Justine Prajitno who had 16 points and Mariah Streeter, who had 12 points.
