OC deputies spotted a stolen vehicle and arrested two suspects on felony charges

While conducting a routine patrol check at a local business, Orange County Sheriff deputies spotted a suspicious vehicle with a stolen license plate, according to San Clemente Police Services.

A records check of the VIN revealed the car was reported stolen out of Los Angeles.

Both suspects were detained and found to have prior arrests for vehicle theft.

A search of the vehicle uncovered narcotics and evidence of identity theft.

Both suspects were arrested and booked on multiple charges.

Here are the penalties for each of these crimes in California:

Identity Theft

Identity theft in California is covered under Penal Code 530.5 PC. It can be charged as either a misdemeanor or a felony, depending on the specifics of the case and the defendant’s criminal history.

  • Misdemeanor: Up to 1 year in county jail and a maximum fine of $1,000.
  • Felony: Up to 3 years in county jail and a maximum fine of $10,000.

Vehicle Theft

Vehicle theft, including grand theft auto, is covered under Penal Code 487(d)(1) PC and Vehicle Code 10851 VC.

  • Grand Theft Auto (Felony): If the vehicle is worth more than $950, penalties include 16 months, 2 years, or 3 years in state prison.
  • Joyriding (Misdemeanor): Up to 1 year in county jail and a fine of up to $5,000.

Possession of Illegal Narcotics

Penalties for possession of illegal narcotics vary based on the type and quantity of the drug, as well as the defendant’s criminal history.
