Ocean View’s baseball team captured a share of the Golden West League title Thursday. (Photo courtesy Ocean View Athletics).
Ocean View’s Spencer Johnsen threw a no-hitter Thursday in the Seahawks 2-0 victory over Segerstrom that helped his team clinch a share of the Golden West League baseball championship.
Johnsen struck out six and walked two and was 2 for 3 at the plate.
Segerstrom (15-12-1, 9-1) captured a share of the league title on Tuesday with a 9-6 victory over Ocean View at Segerstrom. But Ocean View (19-8, 9-1) responded in Thursday’s game with a strong effort at home. It marks the third consecutive league title for Ocean View.
“It was all Spencer today,” said Ocean View Coach Tanner VanMaanen. “Super excited for our guys to bounce back after that tough one on Tuesday. After the first two innings Tuesday, that was 12 scoreless innings by our pitching staff.”
Quinton Custodio was 1 for 3 with a run scored for Ocean View. Seth Churchwell had the only RBI for Ocean View, which had three hits.
Each team had an error.
Segerstrom also got solid pitching from Kenny Gallardo, who pitched the first 2 1/3 innings, allowing one earned run and striking out two and Adrian Villegas, who pitched 3 2/3 innings allowing one hit and no runs and striking out five.
“We went into the game with a plan to go the other way on pitches on the outer half and to jump on mistakes in the inner half,” said Segerstrom Coach Erasmo Ramirez. “The lefty never gave us an inch. He mixed it well, kept us off balance and his defense made plays. You tip your hat to a performance like that. It stings a little bit for sure.
“And maybe later I’ll be able to look back on his outing, me being a former lefty and really applaud his work against us. That being said, I told our players it doesn’t take away from them earning the right to be league champions. And now, we have the besat part of the season to look forward to …. the post season. That’s the goal every year, compete for a league title and playoff baseball. They’ve done both and we’re extremely proud of them.”
Segerstrom also won league titles in 2017 and 2018.
