A new school year has begun at Cal State Long Beach and with it comes the opportunity for the local community to step in and give a little help to disadvantaged students and support nonprofit organizations on campus.
There are two ways for the local Long Beach community to become involved. The first is by participating in the citywide event, Long Beach Gives on September 22. The annual fundraiser showcases over 200 nonprofits including three CSULB organizations: ASI Beach Pantry, Speech-Language Clinic, and the Earl Burns Miller Japanese Garden.
- The ASI Beach Pantry provides non-perishable food to disadvantaged students enrolled at CSULB. Research has shown that over 40 percent of CalState students face food insecurity during the year.
- The Speech-Language Clinic provides comprehensive diagnostic and therapeutic services for children and adults who present with speech and language disorders and enrollment is not determined by their donation or ability to pay.
- The Earl Burns Miller Japanese Garden is a living museum on CSULB campus that is a place of learning, art, and culture for all who enter its gates.
Another way to assist CSULB is by donating gently used business attire during the Clothing Donation Drive to help students look their best for interviews, business events and professional development. The Beach Pantry has partnered with the Career Development Center and the Basic Needs Program to launch the clothing donation drive Monday through Friday, from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m., September 22 through October 7.
Donations may be made at the following locations: University Art Store, ASI Beach Pantry, Career Development Center, The Beach on 2nd Street, University Bookstore, and the University Student Union Information Center.
