A very vocal extreme minority is trying to make the case that the U.S. government should not be deporting violent criminals but a new poll by the AP shows that this is a lie.
The vast majority of U.S. adults favor deporting immigrants living in the United States illegally who have been convicted of a violent crime including 65% who strongly favor the policy and 18% who somewhat favor it.
There is also broad support among people across the political spectrum with majorities of Democrats (79%) and Republicans (89%) in support.
In addition, 7 in 10 favor deporting immigrants living in the United States legally who have been convicted of a violent crime. Fifty-two percent strongly favor such a policy while 17% somewhat favor it. Republicans are more likely than Democrats to strongly favor deporting immigrants living in the United States legally in such cases (69% vs. 40%).
Fifty percent of Americans also think that increasing security at the U.S. southern border ought to be a high priority for the government. Only 17% feel this should be a low priority.
However, opinions are more divided on addressing immigrants already living in the country illegally. Only 33% view deportation as a high priority for the government, while 36% see it as a moderate priority, and 29% consider it a low priority.
Nearly two-thirds of Americans oppose separating children from detained parents entering illegally and 55% oppose deporting immigrants living in the country illegally if it results in separating them from their children who are citizens.
The Trump administration should clearly focus only on removing undocumented residents who are criminals. They should also be more careful about how they go about doing this as more than half of the public oppose policies for arresting residents who are in the country illegally while they are at school or arresting the undocumented while they are at church. About half also oppose making arrests in a hospital.
The nationwide poll was conducted January 9-13, 2025 using the AmeriSpeak® Panel, the probability-based panel of NORC at the University of Chicago. Online and telephone interviews using landlines and cell phones were conducted with 1,147 adults. The overall margin of sampling error is +/- 3.9 percentage points.
California residents in particular are sick and tired of all the crime in this state. Over 70% of California voters voted for Prop. 36 last November, which has already resulted in over 500 arrests here in Orange County since. Jan. 1, according to the OC Sheriff.
Over 74% of Orange County voters also supported Prop. 36.
Democrats lost serious ground with both working-class voters and nonwhite voters in the November election. Why? Because we are all sick of crime and the Democrats have become, particularly in California, the party that caters to the criminals.
The criminals Trump is deporting have more likely been committing more crimes in the U.S. against their very own people. That is fairly typical. That is why the blue party lost so many nonwhite voters.
I am no fan of Trump and voted Libertarian last November as I usually do in Presidential elections. But I am very happy to see so many criminals getting booted out of the United States. I am sad for the innocent folks who are being caught up in this but many of them are learning the hard way that harboring criminals is now a very bad idea.
One has to wonder if Santa Ana will be able to continue to be a Sanctuary City when Trump inevitably cuts off all Federal grants to our city. As the County Seat in Orange County Santa Ana merits a lot of money from the Feds. Our city is already teetering towards bankruptcy. If Trump pulls all Federal funds that will be the end for Santa Ana.
