Construction began last week on a new playground for Heather Park in College Park East. “Yes, fencing went up around the old playground this week,” wrote District Four Council Member/Mayor Schelly Sustarsic in an Aug. 21 email.
“I am told that we have all the new equipment on hand now. It is estimated that the work should be complete by early November,” Sustarsic wrote.
“In the meantime, the tennis courts will remain open as well as most of the grass area. The Porta potty will also remain in place. During construction, I encourage residents to visit either Almond Park or Bluebell Park to use the tot lots, sport courts, and/or picnic benches,” Sustarsic wrote.
Recreation Manager Tim Kelsey also confirmed the construction project had started, as did Deputy Director of Public Works / City Engineer Kathryne Cho. She wrote that the crew had begun demolishing the old playground and the concrete areas.
“A portable restroom will remain for public use, and sidewalk access around the park, including the tennis courts, will remain uninterrupted throughout the construction. We are on schedule to complete the project by Fall 2024,” Cho wrote.
