Mission San Juan Capistrano proudly continues its partnership with Homefront America for the 2025 Field of Honor® to recognize and honor military heroes, veterans and first responders. The installation of hundreds of American flags will be prominently displayed on the Mission’s historic grounds between May 20 through Memorial Day, Monday, May 26. A special opening ceremony will be held on Tuesday, May 20 at noon.
“Mission San Juan is honored to renew our partnership this year with Homefront America to celebrate the enduring sacrifices made by so many. We believe the Mission setting upholds the beauty of the American hero in a way no other can match,” says Mission San Juan Capistrano Executive Director Mechelle Lawrence Adams.
The magnificent display in the Mission’s Central Courtyard will include approximately 500 seven-feet tall American flags, each recognizing a military member, veteran, fallen hero, first responder as well as K-9 and equestrian heroes.
Homefront America, Inc. Founder and President Mamie Yong Maywhort said, “We are so grateful to the Mission for hosting this extraordinary display of patriotism for the community. The historic landmark is the perfect venue to pay respect to those who sacrificed so much for our cherished freedoms.”
The community can sponsor a flag to honor a specific military member, veteran and/or first responder by visiting homefrontamerica.org. Sponsorships begin at $50/flag with all proceeds benefiting Homefront America’s charitable programs for military families.
Field of Honor® will be displayed during Mission San Juan Capistrano’s normal operating hours of 9:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m. beginning Tuesday, May 20, with a special opening on Memorial Day, Monday, May 26. Regular admission pricing will be in effect with free admission to military, veterans, first responders and Mission Preservation Society members throughout the exhibit.

Known as the “Jewel of the Missions,” Mission San Juan Capistrano is a historic landmark and museum that features permanent exhibits with original artifacts as well as traveling and temporary exhibits. Orange County’s only Mission, the site is home to Serra Chapel, The Great Stone Church and the original padres’ quarters of the South Wing and promotes faith, education, preservation and cultural event programming.
Founded on November 1, 1776, by Saint Junipero Serra as the seventh of 21 California missions established by Spain, Mission San Juan Capistrano is owned by the Diocese of Orange and receives no church or state funding. The Mission Preservation Foundation, comprised of business and community leaders, is its fundraising entity committed to ensuring education, preservation and its long-term historic and religious significance.
Homefront America was founded in 2005 by Mamie Yong Maywhort and the late Arthur Hasselbrink (1926-2019). Its mission is to honor those who willingly defend our freedoms and to serve their families with quality, caring and meaningful programs that nurture and enrich their social, emotional, and physical well-being. The 501(c)(3) all-volunteer military outreach and support organization is based in San Juan Capistrano. The Field of Honor® program is licensed by the Colonial Flag Foundation.
