Miley Cyrus is W Magazine‘s latest cover girl and in the magazine’s latest issue, Volume 3, The Pop Issue.
“Each year, The Pop Issue is jam-packed with artistic legends and innovators, highlighting and celebrating the forces that drive pop culture,” the outlet explained. “The issue covers everything from ‘Life in Parties’ to ‘Pot Art,’ showcasing rising stars and established icons across a variety of mediums.”
Cyrus got in-depth with the publication and revealed how her duet with Beyoncé came to be.
It turns out, the “Flowers” singer penned “II Most Wanted” about two and a half years ago and when Queen Bey reached out to collaborate on her “Cowboy Carter” album, Cyrus had the perfect single.
“I told her, ‘We don’t have to get country; we are country. We’ve been country. I said ‘You know, between you being from Texas and me being from Tennessee, so much of us is going to be in this song.’”
The star gushed that “getting to write a song, not just sing, for Beyoncé was a dream come true.”
The song peaked at No. 6 on the Billboard Hot 100 in April.
Their friendship began in 2008 when they performed as part of the all-star charity supergroup for the song “Just Stand Up!”
The famous from that year shows a young Cyrus in her “Hannah Montana” era standing between the “Texas Hold ‘Em” singer and Rihanna during the fundraiser event Fashion Rocks.
“Their hips were, like, up to my shoulders,” she remembered. “They were these powerful, fully realized, grown women, and I’m pretty sure I had braces on the back of my teeth. They were protective of me.”
From there the two remained close, with Beyoncé sending her a “House of Deréon jacket that said Miley on the back in gold studs and some jeans” with her name on it for Christmas.
Cyrus mentioned this in her 2019 song “Cattitude.”
“I say, ‘And for my 16th birthday, I got Deréon from the house of the queen.’”
It turns out the two text each other regularly and Cyrus gave the magazine a peak into what they talk about.
“One of the things that we text about is our relationships with our mothers. Like her mom, Ms. Tina, my mom is also an M.T.: Mama Tish. A lot of people call her Mom, in the way that Ms. Tina is almost not just a mother to Beyoncé, but to Beyoncé’s fans as well,” she said. “Both of us grew up, in our own way, with moms who were everything. My mom was my makeup, hair, seamstress, styling, tour manager—like, the actual manager. The word ‘mother’ is the most all-encompassing word. The mother can be RuPaul; the mother can be Beyoncé. Our fans call us ‘mother.’”
The magazine hits newsstands on June 11.
