Over one-third of the nation’s public pools are not able to open this summer because of lingering COVID-related staffing shortages with lifeguards. Those shortages have impacted the City of Lakewood’s ability to operate its two pools the past two summers.
Fortunately, the Lakewood Family YMCA is teaming up with the City of Lakewood to keep both city pools in operation this summer.
The city has enough lifeguards and staff to fully operate Mayfair Pool—the city’s largest pool—but not enough staff for two pools. So the Y will join with the city this summer to operate McCormick Pool (at Bolivar Park).
Recreation swims at McCormick will be offered to Lakewood residents at the same price they would pay if the city were fully operating the pool.
The YMCA will cover the city’s costs in maintaining McCormick for the duration of the Y’s use of the pool. It’s not a profit-making venture for the Y or the city. The partnership is a cooperative effort that helps the community as a whole.
McCormick Pool recreation swim hours and fees
Starting Monday, June 6, the Y will begin programming at McCormick Pool Monday-Friday, and Lakewood residents can use the pool for recreation swims from 1-3 p.m. at the traditional city cost of $1 for children and $1.50 for adults (18+). Note: Non-Lakewood residents cannot use the pool during this time.
Beginning June 18, city staff will operate McCormick on Saturdays and Sundays for recreation swims from 1-2:30 p.m. and 2:45-4:15 p.m. Residents and non-residents can use the pool during these times at the traditional cost for residents (shown above) and for non-residents at $2 for children and $3 for adults. Swim lessons will also be available on Saturdays from 10:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m.
