ANAHEIM, Calif. (May 18, 2022) — Anaheim Mayor Pro Tem Trevor O’Neil and Council Members Stephen Faessel and Jose Diaz have formally requested the resignation of Anaheim Mayor Harry Sidhu.

The formal request was made Wednesday to Mayor Sidhu’s lawyer, Paul Meyer of Paul S. Meyer APC in Costa Mesa. The city is now awaiting a response.

The formal request follows a call for Sidhu’s resignation on Tuesday by Council Member Avelino Valencia, an additional call for resignation by Council Member Jose Moreno and serious concerns raised by Council Member Gloria Ma’ae.

The formal resignation request is in response to notice of a federal investigation into Sidhu stemming from independent actions he may have taken related to a proposal to sell the Angel Stadium of Anaheim site.

“The deeply troubling issues that have come to our attention involving Mayor Sidhu since May 16, 2022, raise serious concerns and questions about his ability to continue as mayor of Anaheim,” the letter reads. “I and my City Council colleagues now must seek to support the continuity of municipal government, uphold the public trust and continue with the business of the City of Anaheim without the distraction and uncertainty created by the federal investigation involving Mayor Sidhu.”

Sidhu did not attend Tuesday’s City Council.

In the absence of Sidhu, Mayor Pro Tem O’Neil is handling the duties of mayor per Anaheim’s city charter.

Should the mayor step down, a vacancy would be addressed by the City Council in consultation with city staff, Anaheim’s charter and state law.

The seat for Anaheim’s mayor is up for election in November.
