Martin Short is set to take office as mayor of Funner, California and this isn’t an April Fool’s Day joke.
The “Only Murders in the Building” actor is the latest big name to take office in the tiny Southern California town. His two-year stint as mayor follows big names like Jane Lynch, David Hasselhoff and Rob Riggle.
Before you assume the funnyman will start weighing in on policymaking, the position is a promotional one for Harrah’s Resort Southern California.
“As the mayor-elect of Funner, I promise to be more than just a spokesperson dressed in purple from head-to-toe, but instead, the best mayor in the whole darn state,” he said in a statement obtained by The Hollywood Reporter. “It’s my goal to make every part of the already fun Harrah’s Resort SoCal even Funner, and I can’t wait to share my plans with all of my constituents in just six short weeks.”
Yes, Funner is a real place.
It’s located in North San Diego County and was officially renamed in 2016 by the Rincon Band of Luiseño Mission Indians as Harrah’s was looking for a way to differentiate this location from other Indian casinos in the area.
Short will take office on May 13 where he’ll take an oath of office and be given the key to the city.
Part of the oath consists of protecting “fun, good times, laughing out loud and positive vibes from the negative influences determined to turn a smile upside down.”
