The Honorable Paul Farnan, Principal Deputy, Assistant Secretary of the Army for Installations, Energy & Environment, will host a groundbreaking event on Thursday, May 19, at 10 a.m. for the long-awaited energy resilience project to be constructed on Joint Forces Training Base (JFTB).
The event will be co-hosted by The California National Guard, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and Bright Canyon Energy., who will construct, own, operate and maintain the project.
Southern California is prone to a number of natural and man-made disasters ranging from wildfires to earthquakes. Upon completion of the project, the Cal Guard’s ability to perform long-term emergency response operations in support of the approximately 18 million people who live within JFTB’s area of operations will be greatly enhanced. In addition, the project will increase energy resilience for both JFTB and its surrounding communities by adding locally generated, carbon-free, renewable electricity to the grid.
The project will include 26 megawatts (MW) of solar-generated electricity, a 20MW / 40 megawatt-hour battery energy storage system, 3MW of backup generators, and a microgrid control system.
In addition to Mr. Farnan, event participants will include Maj. Gen. Michael Leeney, Commanding General of the Cal Guard’s 40th Infantry Division, JFTB Garrison Commander Lt. Col Manju Vig, and Mr. Bob Smith, President of Bright Canyon Energy.
