A long-time cast member is leaving “Law & Order.”

In a news release, NBC revealed that Sam Waterston, who plays District Attorney Jack McCoy, will be stepping down from the role later this month.

Waterston, who joined the cast in 1994 as the executive assistant district attorney and returned in 2022 in the elevated position, has appeared in more than 400 episodes. The veteran actor won a SAG Award for his portrayal of McCoy in 1999 and was nominated for Emmy and Golden Globe awards multiple times.

“It’s been more fun than I ever anticipated,” said Waterston when the “ripped from the headlines” series returned in 2022. “In fact, I didn’t know what it was gonna be like, but it’s been an enormous thrill.”

In addition to Waterston, the newest version of “Law & Order” stars Hugh Dancy, Camryn Manheim, Odelya Halevi, Mehcad Brooks and Reid Scott.

Beyond “Law & Order,” Waterston has been an actor for seven decades with dozens of credits on IMDb. The site notes he is set to appear in World War II drama, “Six Triple Eight,” which is currently in post-production.

Waterston’s last episode will air on Feb. 22, 2024, according to NBC.

Tony Goldwyn, who starred as President Fitzgerald Grant III in Shonda Rhimes’ hit “Scandal,” has been cast as the new district attorney.
