On March 6, 2023, Homicide detectives arrested 35-year-old Jarid Nakamura for a 2020 murder, previously believed to be an accidental overdose.

On July 6, 2020, officers responded to the 1700 block of Cedar Avenue to assist the Fire Department on an overdose death of a female adult. At the time, there was limited evidence to believe that a crime occurred. The Los Angeles County Office of the Medical Examiner-Coroner determined the death as an accidental overdose of methamphetamine and alcohol.

On March 6, 2023, Nakamura, the calling party from the July 2020 incident, came to LBPD Police Headquarters, asking to speak with Homicide detectives regarding the 2020 incident. During their conversation, Nakamura told detectives he and the deceased woman were in a dating relationship. Nakamura told detectives he gave the decedent narcotics, and he is responsible for her death.

Detectives arrested Nakamura who was booked for murder at Long Beach City Jail.

Nakamura was a City of Long Beach employee at the time of the murder.

The woman was identified as Long Beach resident Sokly Sar, who was 36-years-old at the time of her death.

Detectives anticipate presenting the case to the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office this week.
