Long Beach Police Lieutenant Shaleana Benson promoted to Commander

Long Beach Police Chief Wally Hebeish has selected Shaleana Benson, an 18-year veteran of the Police Department, for promotion to the rank of Commander, effective Jan. 28, 2022.

“I am pleased to promote Commander Benson as the newest member of our Command Staff, assigned to the Community Outreach, Response, and Enforcement Division (CORE),” said Police Chief Wally Hebeish. “Commander Benson is a driven and passionate leader. Through her work in a variety of assignments, she has maintained essential relationships with many of our local communities and agency partners.”

Commander Benson began her career with the LBPD as a police recruit in June 2004. She was promoted to Sergeant in 2013 and Lieutenant in 2020. She held various assignments throughout her career, including Patrol, Media Relations, and Community Engagement.

In addition to being the Department’s Drug Recognition Expert Instructor, she has served as the lead DUI education instructor for department personnel and community members for several years

Commander Benson most recently created a department-wide response to Street Racing and Street Takeovers, which consisted of training LBPD personnel, and facilitating Department participation in the Los Angeles County Street Racing Task Force. She also played an integral role in creating the Long Beach City Municipal Code for Spectators in 2022.

Commander Benson holds a Bachelor of Science in Criminal Justice and Forensic Science from American Continental University and is a graduate of the Sherman Block Leadership and Leadership Long Beach.

A date for a future promotion ceremony to celebrate the accomplishments of recently promoted personnel is to be determined.
